October 28-30, 2011 - Backpacking Trip and Camping Trip

Backpacking trip to The Big Thicket - Turkey Creek Trail - - This 12-mile hike is in a beautiful wilderness area. We will camp at the Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation on Friday night, transport to the trail Saturday morning, and finish the hike before noon on Sunday. This is over Halloween weekend, but what a great safe adventure to be having a really thrilling Halloween in the wilderness.

Canoe and kayak trip - Camping at the Alabama Coushatta Indian Reservation; Saturday – you will spend half the day learning how to canoe, and the other half of the day learning how to kayak. This is a new addition to our programing this fall and we are super excited to have some certified water instructors leading the programming.

November 4-6, 2011 - Camping and Service Project Trips

We will embark with a new group of students to  Sam Houston National Forest, a 161,508 acre beautiful Texan forest just a short drive north of Houston.  The Woods Project students and leaders will be camping next to the serene Stubblefield Lake Recreation Areafull of diverse wildlife and definitely deep in the woods.  The service projects will happen at locations in the national forest.

Camping and Service Project - Katy Prairie Conservancy - - The Katy Prairie lies in the Texas Coastal Plain, and encompasses over a thousand square miles. The prairie is surrounded by the Brazos River on the southwest, pine-hardwood forest on the north, and the city of Houston on the east. We will meet Friday night at Indiangrass Preserve, then Saturday morning head out to different locations on the Katy Prairie for our service projects. After a full day of hard work on Saturday, we'll return to Indiangrass Preserve evening for campfire activities. Sunday morning we will be treated with a sunrise birdwatching experience before heading back to Houston.

November 11-13, 2011 - Two Camping and Service Project Trips

Camping and Service Project - Sam Houston National Forest. We will meet Friday night at (possibly again) Stubblefield campgrounds, then Saturday morning head over to our service project areas - both within the forest and at a preserve run by the Bayou Land Conservancy, where the students will be working on building trails, trail clean-up, and invasive species removal.  Sunday morning we will continue with bonding activities before heading back to Houston.

Camping and Service Project - Friday night - Camping at Double Lake Recreation Area in the Sam Houston National Forest; Saturday - participate in a service project with Sam Houston National Forest.  Service project is focused on trail maintenance, painting benches and signs, and rebuilding of foot bridges.  Saturday night program will include a storyteller (and campfire - fingers crossed)!
